LOVELY LONESTAR - CLEAN AT LAST

Last Friday, I attended the Dallas Quilt Show.  I found this quilt top at one of the vendors selling antique tops, fabric, feedsacks, etc.  I loved this top but it was very yellowed and stained on the outer portions....I hesitated to buy it but, at $65.00, it was  a bargain.  A really sweet lady happened to be at the booth and told me the best way to get rid of the yellow stains was to soak it in  Oxyclean, Cascade and Borax (equal parts of each)...she assured me that using this would work.   She was right....

My Lovely Lonestar in all its pristine glory!!  This beauty is hand pieced and very well made....I love the colors in it and the fact it is (now) completely stain free!

I was so impressed, I have been going through my linens looking for other things that may need a good soak...it's addictive!

  2. Fabulous top!!!

Do you think this would work to clean a completed quilt? I recently received my Mom & Dad's quilt...early 60's...but was used a great deal...several stains.

  3. Gina-absolutely....I don't think soaking a full quilt will hurt it

  4. Your Lone Star looks so clean and bright -- I'm going to try this combination for sure, since I have lots of vintage fabrics and linens to clean. What is the suggested ratio of cleaning compounds to water?

  5. Martha...I just eyeballed it using a big bucket (filled to top with water) and using 1/2 cup of each (borax, cascade and oxyclean). I found I had to soak it over 48 hours and I changed the water and ingredients 3 times. After that, I washed it in Dreft (yummy smell). I have 12 star quilt squares that were heavily stained and I have been soaking them for the last 2 days....it looks like they are all going to come out clean! I'm a believer in this stuff!

  6. How are you going to finish your beautiful lone star? I have a grandmother's flower garden hand pieced top that i can't decide on what to do.

  7. Mary...I think I should hand-quilt it but I have to gather the courage first!
